Trainer Donna Logan has been thrilled with the condition of Volkstok’n’Barrell through recent weeks, and is confident the multiple Group 1 winner is poised for a first three finish in Saturday’s 2016 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast.
Volkstok’n’Barrell has been a standout performer for Logan through his entire racing career so far; posting a commendable eight wins and four minors through a total of nineteen competitive starts since first appearing on course in 2014.
Having failed to handle the heavy going at Randwick when tenth in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last time out on April 2nd, Logan told Racing Ahead the Tavistock gelding has relished a brief freshen-up and should enjoy the conditions of the 2016 Hollindale Stakes this weekend.
“He was gone when the gates opened. It was like he was on rollerblades, he was going up and down and hated it,” Logan said.
“Just forget he went around I reckon. It was just so deep and holding. It was very disappointing.
“He loves the plane, he’s very adaptive to it I can assure you that.
“There’s some good horses in there. Gee Chris Waller’s got a fair few of them but I’m picking he should be in the first three.
“We’re hoping he can overcome that 12 draw but the horse is very well in himself and has thrived, as they do when they get here to Brisbane.”
Logan confirmed the horse will progress to the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 21st should his run in the Hollindale Stakes warrant a berth.
“If he shows he’s good enough and we’re happy with the run tomorrow, that’s definitely the direction we’ll be going,” Logan added.
Announcing himself to the Australian racing community when crossing the ditch during the 2015 Autumn Carnival for immediate success in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), Volkstok’n’Barrell was unable to return to peak form through a busy spring campaign.
Returning to his homeland for sixth in the Group 1 NRM Sprint (1400m) first-up this time, Volkstok’n’Barrell won each of the Group 1 Haunui Farm Classic (1600m) and Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) leading into the Doncaster Mile.
