May 4th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of fourteen has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s most exciting prospects.

Volkstok’n’Barrell has returned to racing in good form this time and has been confirmed to take his place in Queensland for the first time on Saturday after being included in the 2016 Hollindale Stakes field.

Announcing himself to the Australian racing community when crossing the ditch for success in the 2015 edition of the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), Volkstok’n’Barrell resumed this time for sixth in the Group 1 NRM Sprint (1400m) before taking out each of the Group 1 Haunui Farm Classic (1600m) and Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m).

While unable to figure in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships, the Tavistock gelding will relish a step back in class and step up in distance for the 2016 Hollindale Stakes.

Godolphin will launch a three-pronged attack on the Group 2 feature after John O’Shea confirmed all of Hauraki, It’s Somewhat and Old North in the 2016 AD Hollindale Stakes field.

Finishing second to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at the conclusion of an impressive three-year-old campaign, Hauraki returned in spring for a number of similarly-impressive results, including a close second in the Group 3 Craven Plate (1600m).

Resuming this time for third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), the Reset gelding placed third in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and second in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) before a luckless run for seventh in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) most recently.

It’s Somewhat has undoubtedly found the best form of his Australian tenure this time and will be very hard to beat in the Hollindale Stakes from barrier 8, with leading local hoop Damian Browne in the saddle.

Returning from a freshen-up for sixth in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) on February 27th, the Dynaformer gelding won each of the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) before placing a commendable sixth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes last time.

Old North is undoubtedly the unknown quantity of the Hollindale Stakes as the field’s only three-year-old, but is sure to lay a great account for himself with only 56.5kgs in tow and from the rails draw.

Making a strong transition to black type company when fourth in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) on March 12, the Lonhro colt charged home to win the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on March 26th before placing second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on April 16th.

Local hope Sir Moments savaged the line for a close second in last year’s edition of the Hollindale Stakes and is sure to receive a strong ride form in-form hoop Paul Hammersley, while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Excess Knowledge has been charged with overcoming the outside barrier.
