Sir Moments returned to winning form with a gallant performance at Doomben on the weekend and will now be set on a course towards black type success, set to include an appearance in the 2016 Hollindale Stakes (1800m).
Sir Moments has been a strong and consistent performer for the Eagle Farm-based Steve O’Dea since first appearing on course in 2012; posting eight wins and four minors through a total of twenty-one career starts.
Jumping from the gates well in the Qpos Handicap (1350m), jockey Paul Hammersley allowed the Choisir gelding to stride forward an take a handy position just off the pace of the race’s early leaders; receiving a good run in transit before mustering a typically strong late turn of foot to savage the line for a comfortable win.
O’Dea was pleased with Sir Moments’ performance for success in the Qpos Handicap and underlined the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) as the horse’s next point of call ahead of the 2016 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast in May.
“It was always going to be a trap race second-up and he was never going to win the way the race was run,” O’Dea told Racenet.
“But third-up on Saturday in a much faster run race, he was able to utilise his sprint and finish over the top of them.
“He’s won three times at Doomben but it’s not really his preferred track because of his racing pattern.
“The race being switched to a big track like the Sunshine Coast looks to be in his favour, and although he will have to carry a big weight again, he is looking for the mile now.”
Sir Moments stamped himself as one to watch as three-year-old through the 2014 Brisbane Winter Carnival; posting a career-best win to date in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) before repeating the dose in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) a week later.
Resuming in 2015 in similarly good condition, Sir Moments won the Tails Stakes before finishing a close second in the Hollindale Stakes.
