Tarrant Hoping for Damp 2015 Hollindale Stakes Track

April 24th, 2015

Jockey Luke Tarrant has partnered talented Queenslander Rudy to notable success this season but believes the four-year-old will need reasonable rain to fall over the Gold Coast track if he is any chance of overcoming the talented field confirmed for the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m).

Securing undoubtedly his best race win to date in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13th, Tarrant continued his affiliation with Rudy through the Sydney Autumn Carnival; placing a close second in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1300m) first-up and progressing to an impressive fourth in the rescheduled featured Group 1 Doncaster Mile most recently on April 6th.

Expecting an easier prospect than the talented and capacity field confirmed for the 2015 Hollindale Stakes, Tarrant told the Courier Mail he is confident the Red Dazzler gelding will lay a great account for himself but is unsure if he can win on a reasonable dry track.

“I can’t believe how strong the race is,” Tarrant said.

“You look through the field and you need to have won $500,000 just to get in.

“I was disappointed when they called off the races on the Saturday (April 4th). I went there thinking ‘I’m going to win the Doncaster’ because I just know how good he is on the wet. Unfortunately they called it off and the track had started to dry out by Monday afternoon.

“He still ran a super race and I’m sure he’s going to do the same (in the Hollindale Stakes) but I’m just concerned they might be a bit slick for him around that track.”

Posting seven wins and a further five minor places through his 22 career starts so far, Rudy arguably stamped his claims as one to watch through the 2014 edition of the Brisbane Winter Carnival; winning a pair of minor sprints and progressing to third place finishes in each of the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) and Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) most notably.

Returning in summer for back-to-back second place finishes in Doomben short distance races, Rudy earned a maiden trip to Sydney for the Villiers Stakes in taking out the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m) on November 29th.
