A host of Doomben Cup hopes heading up to Brisbane for the winter will kick off their carnival campaigns at the Gold Coast Racecourse on Saturday in the 2015 AD Hollindale Stakes, including four for Sydney’s ace trainer Chris Waller.
Waller has won two previous editions of this weekend’s feature, the $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m), with Metal Bender (2010) and My Kingdom Of Fife (2011).
Both horses backed up with competitive runs in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane, Metal Bender completing the double and My Kingdom Of Fife running second.
Now Waller returns with a quartet of Hollindale – Doomben Cup hopes out to complete the coveted winter double last achieved just last year with Guy Walter’s classy mare Streama (2014).
This year Waller has entered three previous Queensland contenders plus a Sunshine State newbie in nine-year-old I’m Imposing.
Aside from the revitalised veteran Waller’s other Hollindale chances on the weekend are 2013 runner-up Foreteller who was also second in that year’s Doomben Cup, Group 1 winner in Perth Moriarty who won last year’s Eagle Farm Cup and past Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur coming off a third in the Neville Sellwood Stakes in Sydney.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained French import Pornichet won the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 28, the Vespone stallion another top Hollindale nominee for the weekend.
He comes off a fifth in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on a Soft (7) Randwick track on April 6, which produces a number of other AD Hollindale Stakes hopefuls this year.
Other notable Doncaster graduates entered for Saturday’s weight-for-age showdown include local Gold Coast galloper Rudy who ran a brave fourth for his trainer Helen Page and sixth-placed mare Arabian Gold.
The best fancied of the mares looking to go back-to-back in this year’s Hollindale Stakes if accepted when the final field is out on Wednesday meanwhile is the Roger James-trained Silent Achiever.
The six-year-old daughter of Zabeel is a four-time Group 1 winner but hasn’t been seen in the winner’s stall since her Group 1 The BMW (2400m) victory last year.
She was last seen defending her title in that race on March 28 and so drops back notably in distance for the Hollindale run.
Other notable AD Hollindale Stakes 2015 entries include last start Mornington Cup winner Banca Mo and Sandown Classic runner-up from the spring Epingle.
