A particularly talented field of 12 has been nominated for this weekend’s featured Group 1 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast, including several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
Confirmed to take up a breeding career at the conclusion of the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, trainer Guy Walter has elected to nominate Streama for an appearance in the 2014 Hollindale Stakes.
Securing eight wins and 13 places from 32 competitive race starts to date, Streama was one of the standout performers of the 2013 racing calendar, finishing second in both the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and winning the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) most notably.
Steadily building to the task at hand over five starts this preparation, the Stratum mare finishing fifth in the particularly well contested Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) first-up before register back-to-back sixths when hampered early in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Unable to handle to heavy going of the soaked Randwick track in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th, Streama returned to competitive form with a keen turn of foot to finish fourth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) last time out, setting up an exciting final campaign on the tracks of Queensland.
Also appearing in nominations for the 2014 A.D. Hollindale Stakes is Bart and James Cummings-trained gelding Precedence.
A consistent starter and performance in the Race that Stops a Nation in recent seasons, Precedence is yet to make a racing appearance in 2014, but will draw strength and confidence from an impressive 2013 spring preparation which delivered back-to-back wins in the Group 2 International Cup (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).
Figuring as the only trainer to enter more than one runner in nominations, trainer Chris Waller is poised to saddle both Junoob and Moriarty in the 2014 Hollindale Stakes.
Returning to the track in arguably career best form this time in, Junoob has not finished outside the places in his last six appearances, winning both the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) in his two most recent starts.
Claiming an impressive total of nine wins and seven places from only 25 race starts to date, the Haafhd gelding arguably offers Waller his best chance of success this weekend, but will have to find an extra gear if to secure a third-consecutive race win in the 2014 Hollindale Stakes.
Contesting a strong 2013 spring preparation which delivered a comfortable win in the Group 2 Bacardi Hill Stakes (2000m) and unlucky third in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), Moriarty has continued to figure in contention in high-stakes races this year, finishing third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 22nd and fourth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) most notably.
Securing seven wins and four places from only 20 race starts so far, Fat Al offers trainer Peter Moody a great chance of success in the 2014 Hollindale Stakes, despite being unable to figure in either of his last two starts.
Winner of the 2012 edition of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), Moody is confident a far firmer surface in Queensland will suit the Al Maher gelding, and believes a favourable barrier draw will go a long way towards victory this weekend.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 A.D. Hollindale Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
