HOLLINDALE STAKES
The most anticipated series of race meetings in Queensland is without doubt the Brisbane Winter Carnival. Running from the end of April through until June, the Winter Carnival is host to a range of elite race days including the second of the season, the Hollindale Stakes Day. Held at the scenic Gold Coast racecourse, an hour out of Brisbane in early May, the feature race of the day is the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes, a quality weight-for-age event run over the staying distance of 1,800 metres, open to horses three and up. The first race of this length in the winter, the Hollindale Stakes really gets the betting action heated up as punters pick their selections from the competitive runners all chasing the $300,000 purse the Hollindale Stakes has on offer.
The Hollindale Stakes is an ideal lead-up to the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) the following week at Doomben. Runners who can last the distance of the Hollindale Stakes will have no problem with the 1200m track for The BTC, also a weight-for-age race but worth a very alluring $400,000. Another race that entries for the Hollindale Stakes are likely to be aimed at afterwards is the Group 1 XXXX Doomben Cup a fortnight after. The Doomben Cup is a more challenging distance of 2020 metres, is another weight-for-age event and is worth even more at $500,000. The Hollindale Stakes/Doomben Cup double is also very popular with the punters and pays some truly terrific dividends if you successfully pick the winner of the two events. The last horse to win both races in the same year was Above Deck (2006); other horses to secure this double victory and put smiles on the lucky punters backing them include Mr Bureaucrat (2002), Might And Power (1998), Danewin (1995), Durbridge (1994) and Rough Habit (1991 & 1992).

Some legendary gallopers have claimed victory at the Hollindale Stakes including Shogun Lodge who managed two wins in 2000 and 2001, and the great Might And Power (1998) who secured a number of other Group 1 victories including the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. And in recent years the event has seen increased interest from international entries as well, adding to the status of the race across the globe.
All Australian bookmakers offer a great range of betting options for the Hollindale Stakes. As it is one of the very first races in the Brisbane Carnival, it is an excellent event to get on board with. Watch this race closely for which horses to follow for the rest of the carnival; and place your bets to hopefully win some profits early on!
